Marvel Review for 7/27/11

None of the Marvel issues I read for this week were bad, there was one that was mediocre though.

Incredible Hulk # 633
Heart of the Monster finally starts to go somewhere other than smashy smashy.  Pak brings in some plot and some real good dialogue.  "The Hulk ALWAYS comes back".  Again, I will be sorry to see Pak leave, but Arron looks like he has some good ideas for the future.  This month will see the end of Pak's 6 year run on the Hulk and after this issue it looks like he is going to end on a good note.

Rating: Great beginning of the end

Amazing Spider-Man # 666
I have already made my feelings known about "Spider-Island" and here is where the story begins, also where I get to eat crow.  Dan Slott really shows what a good spidey book can be.  Guess I forgot that there is more to the story than just "Manhattan develops spider powers.  At some point in the future, Parker will have to kill someone.  This is a great place to start for any new reader, or anyone who just hasn't read a spider-man book in a while.

Rating: I eat crow, great book

The Mighty Thor # 4
Asgard vs Galactus and the Silver Surfer!  Epic battle and great dialogue.  "How do beings like Odin and Galactus fight?"  Without spoiling too much, Thor knocks the crap out of Galactus and ends up on Mars with the Silver Surfer.  While this battle is taking place, Volstag awaits the people of Broxton who show up demanding Asgard return to where it belongs and Loki is making a deal with the "three weird sisters" to save Thor.

Rating: Good, but no idea where it fits in cannon.

Secret Avengers # 15
I could not actually finish this issue.  It seems to be poking fun at comics in general   Some tabloid tries to run a story saying that Bucky is still alive, even though he is not.  One of the writers goes so far as to say that he will return someday as so many others have, and this way it looks like they knew all along.  The story continues and eventually Black Widow talks them into pulling the story.  All of this is supposed to be going on while Nazi's are attacking Washington D.C. and the Worthy are running rampant across the Earth, sure.

Rating: Not worth the time

Uncanny X-Force # 12
Little disappointed it took so long to get this issue out as the series was on a nearly bi-monthly schedule.  The story continues in the Age of Apocalypse universe.  Tensions mount between Logan and Jean Grey.  The teams split with one group going after the "life seed" and the other attempting to rescue Gateway from a jail built by Apocalypse.

Rating: Good

New Mutants # 28
This is the one mediocre issue I mentioned.  The story goes no where and I honestly would not have gotten it if not for the fact that it seemed like Illyana was actually going to do something.  There is some bonding between Hope and Nate Grey, I'd like to see something happen here, but doubt we will.  Next issue brings the New Mutants into Fear Itself, little late to the party, huh.

Rating: Mediocre

X-Men Legacy # 252
The fight against Legion's escaped personas continues in Paris.  Styx, a persona that makes anyone he touches become a mindless slave has captured Xavier.  Rouge gets wounded in combat with another persona when he blows himself up.

Rating: Good

Captain America & Bucky # 620
This is what the previous Captain America series has evolved into.  Ed Brubaker delves into the origins of Bucky and how he first met Steve Rodgers.  The story is very well done and really leaves you feeling for the character of Bucky.

Rating: Definitely one to pick up
